The DHI Method
DHI stands for Direct Hair Implantation, meaning the direct implantation of hair follicles. With this method, the hair follicles are first extracted from the donor area, which is typically located at the back or sides of the scalp.
The extracted hair follicles are then prepared and placed individually into a DHI pen, also known as a Choi pen. Using the pen, the hair follicles are implanted directly into the area where increased density or additional hair is desired. The DHI pen allows the specialist to control the placement of each individual hair follicle. This level of control is particularly important when working between existing hairs.
It is important that the new hair follicles are positioned so that they blend naturally with the existing hair in the area.
DHI hair transplantation is a modern method of implanting hair follicles, in which the extracted grafts are placed directly into the scalp using a specially designed DHI pen.
The method is particularly suitable when working closely between existing hairs and when precise control over the angle, direction, and depth of the transplanted hairs is important.
At Håreksperten, we always assess which method is best suited to each individual client. DHI is not necessarily better than Sapphire FUE, nor is Sapphire FUE automatically the best solution in every case.
The methods have different strengths and are used for different purposes. Our recommendation is therefore always based on your individual hair condition, the quality of the donor area, the size of the area to be treated, and the result you wish to achieve. DHI is available as an optional add-on to a hair transplant package.
This means that DHI is not a standalone package with a separate base price. If DHI is recommended as the implantation method, an additional fee of DKK 1,870 / €250 will be added to the price of the relevant hair transplant package.
DHI at a Glance
DHI is particularly suitable for increasing density between existing hairs.
The hair follicles are implanted using a specially designed DHI pen. DHI may be suitable for a second hair transplant. The method can also be appropriate for women with diffuse hair loss.
The DHI method is not necessarily better than Sapphire FUE. The choice of method is made following an individual assessment. DHI costs an additional DKK 1,870 / €250 on top of the package price.
How Is the DHI Method Performed?
A treatment begins with an individual assessment of your hair loss and donor area. The specialists assess, among other factors, how much hair remains in the area that is to be
treated, the size of the area, and how many hair follicles the donor area can provide. The hair’s structure, thickness, growth direction, and existing density are also assessed. This information is used to plan the treatment and determine whether DHI or Sapphire FUE is the most suitable method.
During the procedure, the hair follicles are extracted from the donor area. The extracted grafts are examined and prepared before being placed into the DHI pen. The hair follicles are then implanted individually into the recipient area.
The precise placement allows the direction and angle of the transplanted hairs to be aligned with the existing hair. The aim is not simply to add more hair follicles, but to create a harmonious transition between the transplanted and existing hair.
However, the result always depends on individual factors such as the quality of the donor area, the extent of hair loss, and the body’s healing process.
Who Is DHI Particularly Suitable For?
DHI is often chosen when the aim is to create greater density between existing hairs rather than cover a very large area.
The method may be suitable for individuals who still have a significant amount of their natural hair but are experiencing thinning or reduced density in specific areas.
The DHI method may be particularly suitable for:
- Individuals who still have a substantial amount of their natural hair.
- Increasing density between existing hairs.
- Smaller areas where precise placement is important.
- A second hair transplant focused on increasing density.
- Some women with diffuse hair loss.
- Areas close to existing or previously transplanted hair.
However, it is important to emphasise that DHI is not the right solution for everyone. A specific method should not be selected solely based on personal preferences or general claims that one technique is better than another.
At Håreksperten, a comprehensive assessment is therefore always carried out before the treatment method is recommended.
DHI for Increasing Density Between Existing Hair
One of the most common reasons for choosing DHI is the desire to achieve greater density in an area where hair is still present.
Increasing density means that new hair follicles are implanted between the existing hairs. Therefore, the treatment does not necessarily involve a completely bald area, but rather an area where the hair has become thinner or less dense.
When working between existing hairs, precision is essential. The new hair follicles must be positioned so that they blend naturally with the existing hair pattern. At the same time, the specialist must take the surrounding hairs and hair follicles into consideration during implantation.
The extent of the improvement that can be achieved depends on factors such as the existing hair density, the number of available grafts, and the quality of the donor area.
DHI for a Second Hair Transplant
Some clients choose to undergo a second hair transplant to increase density or improve an area that has previously been treated.
During a second hair transplant, transplanted hairs are often already present in the recipient area. The new treatment must therefore be planned with careful consideration of the position and direction of the existing hairs.
DHI may be particularly relevant in such cases because the method allows precise work between existing or previously transplanted hairs. The aim may be to create more uniform density, treat smaller areas with insufficient fullness, or improve the transition between different sections of the hair.
Before a second hair transplant, it is important to assess whether the donor area has sufficient capacity. The results of the previous procedure and the quality of the existing hair are also taken into consideration.
DHI Hair Transplantation for Women
Women often experience a different pattern of hair loss than men. Instead of developing a completely bald area, the hair may gradually become thinner across a larger area. This is often referred to as diffuse hair loss.
When a significant amount of existing hair remains, DHI may be a suitable method. The DHI pen allows new hair follicles to be placed directly between the existing hairs with a high level of precision.
However, this does not mean that all women experiencing hair loss are suitable candidates for a hair transplant. Female hair loss can have various causes, and treatment should only be planned after the pattern of hair loss and the quality of the donor area have been assessed.
The specialists assess, among other factors, whether the donor area is stable and has sufficient density. They also evaluate whether a hair transplant can realistically achieve the desired improvement.
What Is the Difference Between DHI and Sapphire FUE?
Both DHI and Sapphire FUE are modern and recognised hair transplantation methods. The main difference lies in how the hair follicles are implanted and the types of treatments for which each method is typically used.
With Sapphire FUE, small channels are first opened in the recipient area. The extracted hair follicles are then placed into these prepared channels. Sapphire FUE is often used for larger hair transplant procedures where a wider area needs to be covered.
The method may, for example, be suitable for more extensive hair loss. With DHI, the hair follicles are implanted directly into the scalp using a DHI pen. The method is typically used when working between existing hairs or when a smaller area requires precise implantation.
Therefore, DHI cannot generally be considered superior to Sapphire FUE.
The methods have different areas of application, and the most suitable choice depends on the individual client’s needs. For one client, Sapphire FUE may provide the best conditions for covering a larger area. For another, DHI may be more appropriate when the goal is to increase density between existing hairs.
Is DHI a separate hair transplant package?
No. At Håreksperten, DHI is not offered as a separate hair transplant package.
DHI is an optional addition to the hair transplant package recommended based on the scope of the treatment and your individual hair condition.
If DHI is assessed as the most suitable implantation method, the following additional fee will be added to the package price:
Additional fee for the DHI method: DKK 1,870 / €250
The additional fee covers the use of the specially designed DHI pen and the specific implantation method.
This means that the total price consists of the price of the relevant hair transplant package, plus an additional DHI fee of DKK 1,870 / €250 if the DHI method is used.
Therefore, the DHI surcharge does not replace the package price but is added on top of it.
How does Håreksperten choose the right method?
There is no single hair transplant method that is best for everyone.
The choice between DHI and Sapphire FUE is therefore based on an individual assessment. The specialists consider factors such as:
- The size of the area to be treated.
- The amount of existing hair in the recipient area.
- Whether the goal is to increase density or cover a larger area.
- The density, quality, and capacity of the donor area.
- The thickness, texture, and natural growth direction of the hair.
- Whether a hair transplant has been performed previously.
- Your preferences and expectations regarding the outcome.
The result that can realistically be achieved. Based on this assessment, the method that offers the best conditions for achieving a natural and harmonious result is recommended.
